How To Use Do It Like A Woman

Being a single woman doesn’t mean being alone, it means being in good company. According to the 2005 US Census results, 51% of the women in this country are unmarried. Also in 2005, 1.5 million homes sold to those single women.

Unfortunately, not all 51% of us were raised to wield a soldering iron, a screwdriver or a pair of needle nose pliers. Electrical systems, plumbing, furnaces and car maintenance were not subjects that the majority of our mothers taught us about.

Regardless of our knowledge base, we have homes to maintain: Outlets need to be replaced, basements need to be kept dry, coat racks need to be hung. Instruction manuals, how-to books, and classes are all good things to have and do but let’s face it, this information should be easy to access and free.

My website is compartmentalized into categories. You can read through the web log OR you can read through the entries for each category.

If you want to expand your knowledge base, click on the How To category. I’ve provided basic and concise step-by-step instructions on how to do anything from complete a circuit to refinish hardwood floors.

Want to see what Projects I’m working on? Some of my favorite projects were inspired by others and I hope to keep that momentum going by writing my own down.

When in doubt, make some Lists, my lists are meant to be informational and entertaining.

Things break and fxing them can be a hard and isolating process. It's okay to feel frustrated and it's okay to ask for help as you can see in my journal of Repairs.

Also, I’ve found some great Tools that you might want to check out. Many of them have allowed me to do and fix things that I couldn’t have done alone.

My very own throw-her-hands-up-in-the-air-and-walk-away-at-the-slightest-sign-of-maintenance daughter is now changing her own oil, rewiring lamps and making some serious steps toward replacing the bathroom outlet. Many women have contacted me saying how glad they are to have a compatriot in the world of do-it-herself.

Excellent. Sisters are doing it for themselves. I used to, before I got sick. I was the first female member of the British Decorators Association (a trade organisation for painters and decorators). Taught my son how to use a saw. Although I can't do it myself any more, I can, at least, ensure that no tradesperson tries to rip me off with shoddy work because I know how it ought to be done. Keep up the good work Niki!
